What is TPU
Thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) is a rubber-like, flexible, and durable plastic material that's resistant to abrasion, chemicals, oils, and low temperatures. It's a type of thermoplastic elastomer (TPE) that's made up of hard and soft segments. TPU is non-toxic, odorless, and complies with food safety standards. It's also free of harmful chemicals like heavy metals, formaldehyde, and phthalates. TPU is made from three basic raw materials: A polyol or long-chain diol, A chain extender or short-chain diol, and A diisocyanate. TPU can be easily colored, welded, painted, printed, and die-cut.
Thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) has many benefits, including:
Abrasion resistance
TPU is up to 10 times more resistant to abrasion than most PVC formulations. This makes it a good choice for applications like inflatable rafts, dock seals, and oil booms.
Chemical resistance
TPU is resistant to a wide range of chemicals, including oils, greases, fuels, solvents, and more.
Flexibility and adaptability
TPU is flexible and adaptable over a wide temperature range. This makes it suitable for a variety of applications, including conveyor belts that can handle complex shapes.
Shock absorption
TPU's combination of elasticity and tensile strength allows it to absorb and dissipate energy efficiently.
Temperature resistance
TPU can withstand temperatures of up to 248°F.
Recyclability
TPU is recyclable and can be molded, extruded, and reused.
Durability and longevity
TPU is tough and durable, making it suitable for a variety of soft and semi-rigid applications.
Other properties
TPU is also resistant to weather and high-energy radiation, and has good compression set properties.
